There are a whole batch of questions that naturally arise from my decision to move to Eugene and return to school. Where will the chickens go? Where will we live? Who will live in our house? We’ll start with the last question first. We are working with a property management company to rent out our house for the three years we are gone in Eugene.
Soaked, again
The appropriate category for this post would be “rant”. You have been warned. There is swearing. I don’t consider myself a fair-weather gardener, mostly due to necessity. I live in Portland, Oregon, where it rains about nine months out of the year. It is Spring – the time to plant seeds – and seeds must be indeed be planted. If you wait to do yard
Two Years
Man was lost and saved in a garden. -Pascal (1623-62) Two years ago I started this blog, originally under the name MuddyClogs and today as HipChickDigs. This summer will be our third anniversary here. Over that time, I think I have both lost and been saved in the garden. It has been a quiet comfort to me when I’ve seen friends crack under the pressure
Wedding Flowers
One of my friends got married yesterday, which was very sweet and exciting. Although I have no experience doing wedding flowers, she enlisted my help since I know plants and have an eye for design. At first I wasn’t nervous because we were talking one casual bridal bouquet for a small, ten person ceremony. But as the wedding grew, my nerves mounted. The final tally
The Cleanse: Final Week
We have been experimenting with a cleanse diet for the last three weeks. There are several cleanse diets out there and we used one a friend has done for years. The Cleanse: Week 1
The first week of a four week cleanse is now behind me. The first two days were pretty rough, as I had an amazing headache from caffeine withdrawal. The idea of going on a restricted diet, with no processed foods, seemed like an interesting way to make a fresh start on spring. In general, I tend to eat whole foods, but there are exceptions for all
Onward
Yesterday I enjoyed my first cup of coffee at a crowded local bar, watching the inauguration unfold and history be written. It felt to good to be out in the crowd sharing the anticipation and rejoicing together. I spent the rest of the day walking around in an Obama cloud. I thought his speech was great and am completely guilty of taking a picture of
Goodbye Gramps
My grandfather died peacefully Tuesday morning in his sleep – he was 85 years old. His health has been very poor since a stroke he suffered from last May. I feel incredibly grateful to have had seven more months to be with him, always being fully aware that this visit might be the last. On Christmas his kidneys began to fail and he fought still
