Thank you all for your great comments on the post last week about the fifth anniversary of Hip Chick Digs! It was SO fun to read all of your comments about your homesteading journey and get to know you all better – especially you quiet ones who have been with me for several years! Thanks to a random number picker, Kat is the winner of
HipChickDigs Turns Five + Giveaway!
Hip Chick Digs turns five today! I wrote my first blog post about nine months after we moved into this teeny 1927 bungalow on a tenth of an acre covered with lawn. It’s easy to lose sight of how far I’ve come amongst the weeds and planting chores. But marking this anniversary is a time to acknowledge how hard work combined with fertile Willamette Valley
Our Homestead Plan
We moved into our homestead back in 2006 when it was just a blank canvas of lawn, with a couple old rose bushes here and there. After six years of major landscape changes, it’s about time I got around to making a decent planting plan of the homestead. I used AutoCAD to create the above plan showing what we currently have growing on our 1/10
Upcoming Event: Eugene Home & Garden Show
This Sunday at 1pm I will be speaking and signing copies of my book, Modern Homestead, at the Eugene Home & Garden Show. I have always wanted to attend the show because I know lots of my favorite local nurseries are there talking about edible landscaping. It will be a treat to share some ideas and inspiration with fellow green thumbs. These kinds of events
Portland, I’m Coming Home!
Let’s be honest: my heart is planted in my Portland garden. It has been tough to be away for the last couple years temporarily living in Eugene while I work on my masters of landscape architecture degree. I have found a few places to make me feel at home-ish here in Eugene, but I have never stopped pining for my “real” home. I have been
Chicken Mites: Yikes!
I’ve been keeping chickens for several years now and have always counted myself lucky that I never had a run in with mites. Up until this summer, I had never lost a member of our flock to an animal attack. Losing one of our ducks to a raccoon earlier this summer was the first sign that my excellent track record was about to hit some
Visiting New Chicken-Keepers
Recently I had the pleasure of visiting the backyard of Brian and Tara, thirty-something parents who just started keeping chickens. They used the standard sized chicken coop plans from my book Modern Homestead to come up with a variation that would work for their backyard. It was really cool to see what a basic plan and a little imagination can come up with. The modifications
Portland Book Event This Saturday
In Other Words is a great shop in Portland specializing in feminist literature and I am proud to have an event there this weekend! They are the feminist bookstore featured in Portlandia, which is a hilarious show in case you haven’t seen it yet. I will be there at 4:00pm this Saturday July 30th. I will have a few copies of the book to giveaway!
Goodbye Milt
We found Milt a farm! Our drake, or male duck, is now spreading his love among a large flock of ladies living on a farm just south of Eugene. Whew! We were not looking forward to having him for dinner. I think Bess, Pepper, Gladys and Ramona are enjoying the peace and quiet. We are getting a steady supply of eggs already from both Gladys
