A couple weeks ago, I wrote a brief blog post about having dinner with Ruth Reichl, the editor-in-chief for Gourmet magazine. I then went on to get distracted with moving, wrapping up my job, etc. and never wrote my intended post. Here it is my friends! As I mentioned earlier, this opportunity came up through my old job and I have to say it was
Eugene Arrival
We said goodbye to our old house this weekend, as we packed up all of our belongings and moved two hours south to Eugene. My graduate program in landscape architecture starts next Monday and there looks like so much to do between now and then! I have a bed and most of my room unpacked. The kitchen is getting there, but I have about thirty
Last Week of Normalcy
I’m heading off this morning to my last week at work. After five years of working at the same place, and nine years working in this field, it feels a little weird to know this weekend will last for three years. I will be working hard in my graduate program, but I won’t be an office gal for awhile. I spent the weekend weeding, working
My New Home
I truly despise renting, which is part of the reason I have been so stressed about housing the last few weeks leading up to my move to Eugene and return to graduate school. My motivation for buying a house was driven in a large part by my desire to paint the walls whatever color I wanted, grow my garden however I determined, and keep a
House Hunt

This summer will be our third anniversary here. Over that time, I think I have both lost and been saved in the garden. It has been a quiet comfort to me when I’ve seen friends crack under the pressure
Wedding Flowers
One of my friends got married yesterday, which was very sweet and exciting. Although I have no experience doing wedding flowers, she enlisted my help since I know plants and have an eye for design. At first I wasn’t nervous because we were talking one casual bridal bouquet for a small, ten person ceremony. But as the wedding grew, my nerves mounted. The final tally
Onward
Yesterday I enjoyed my first cup of coffee at a crowded local bar, watching the inauguration unfold and history be written. It felt to good to be out in the crowd sharing the anticipation and rejoicing together. I spent the rest of the day walking around in an Obama cloud. I thought his speech was great and am completely guilty of taking a picture of
Goodbye Gramps
My grandfather died peacefully Tuesday morning in his sleep – he was 85 years old. His health has been very poor since a stroke he suffered from last May. I feel incredibly grateful to have had seven more months to be with him, always being fully aware that this visit might be the last. On Christmas his kidneys began to fail and he fought still
