Book Expo America 2011 was quite a whirlwind! I left our homestead for a few days to fly to NYC and have a couple signings at the event. It was the first time I have ever been to BEA and it was crazy! I was staying right by Times Square and the city was hot and buzzing with people. This is the biggest book event
Elliot Bay Book Company – Sunday 6/12
Elliot Bay Book Company in Seattle will be hosting me for a signing this upcoming weekend. The event will start at 2:00pm on Sunday June 12th. I am really excited to be there at such a great, independent bookstore and I’m hoping to see some friendly gardening faces! I think I will be taking the train up and back, which should be a really gorgeous
Hello Book Expo America
Hello again New York! I am here for just a short stint to attend the Book Expo America, or BEA event. It is the biggest book event in the country and I will have a couple signings tomorrow. The first one is at the “author table” from 11:30a-12:30p and then at the Fulcrum booth in the afternoon from 2p-3p. I am so excited to be
Spring Vegetable Starts
Last weekend, my nephews went with me on a tour of garden and feed stores. Their family is interested in keeping backyard chickens after babysitting ours last summer while we were living in New York. I was also getting impatient with the slow seed germination in our garden and decided to buy a few starts to take the edge off this waiting game. We stopped
I’m Somebody!
I am honored to have had my first book signing event at Powell’s City of Books in Portland this past Sunday. When I arrived, I saw my name on their list of author events and my nervousness was replaced with excitement. My mind raced immediately to that scene from the movie The Jerk. Steve Martin’s character gets the new phone book, sees his name and starts
Poultry-Proof Garden

Visit Me At Powell’s
Come say hello and talk homesteading with me! This Sunday, April 17th, from 4:00p-6:00p I will be signing my new book at Powell’s downtown location on Burnside. It’s such an honor to be invited for an event at Powell’s. I blush just thinking about it and need to pinch myself to see if I’m dreaming. I am fortunate to have a really supportive community in
Eugene Grafting Fair
The Eugene Permaculture Guild hosts an annual, free Spring Propagation Fair that I recently attended. The event included a fruit tree grafting portion, a seed swap area and several speakers throughout the day talking about things related to edible gardening. I have always been curious about how fruit tree grafting works so I went to check it out. I was first and foremost completely blown
Oregon Country Fair
I experienced a truly unique, Eugene event this weekend: the Oregon Country Fair. This is an annual event held every year on the outskirts of town. Booths and stages are built into a forested setting and people buy tickets Friday through Sunday, either for the whole weekend or just one day. There are various food vendors, crafts, and interesting bands and entertainment all weekend. I
